May is the month for Mental Health Awareness!
Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the U.S. since 1949. Together we can spread helpful mental health resources and information on local programs or initiatives and content to specific populations (for example, caregivers, youth and young adults, underrepresented communities). The month is also a chance to encourage people to take action.
Facts :
- 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, and less than half of them receive treatment.
- 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience a serious mental illness each year, and less than two-thirds receive treatment.
- 160 million people live in Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas.
- 65% of Americans are concerned about the stigma around mental illness.
- Only half of Americans (52%) say they are familiar with the mental health care system.
This month lets spread awareness, educate ourselves and others, and end the stigma around mental illness. Share the message to your friends, family, coworkers, strangers, etc. Share on social media your own story or help educate others. Together we can heal out loud!
